What is recorded here

Egan (1960, 26) records that the togher (GA088-014----) crossing Kellysgrove bog, which was believed to connect Clontuskert Abbey (GA088-001----) to the S with the church (GA088-020001-) in Pollboy to the N, was known locally as the ‘Monks’ Pass’. Near it was the ‘Monks’ Well’ (GA088-015----) and the ‘Priest’s Kish’. The word ‘kish’ is sometimes used for a small makeshift bridge found in bog and straddling a drain. The area around the togher was checked but no visible surface traces of such a feature were noted.

Field system in AbbeyparkField system · 1.0 mi

Explorer Tom Field system in Abbeypark where the rules for visitors are basically 'don't trip over the banks'. The D-shaped enclosures radiate out like a bad sunburst pattern from an old priory. Spend ten minutes wandering these paths and you’ll have a yarn to tell at the pub tonight.

Clontuskert Abbey (in ruins)Religious house, Augustinian canons · 1.1 mi

Explorer Tom Clontuskert Abbey was saved by a hero nobody remembers, probably a guy who just pointed in the right direction once. It’s well-preserved now, which feels like a small miracle for a place that sat in fields. Grand place for a sulk or a snog, your call.

RosglossHouse · 1.1 mi

Explorer Tom Rosgloss would order extra thick chips and vinegar if it could go to the chipper. The tooled limestone shows off its skills like a peacock, which is annoying. Take a mate and argue about style.

Ardcarn IslandsIslet · 1.1 mi

Explorer Tom Ardcarn Islands offers a shortcut to nowhere in particular, which is the best kind of place if you know how to look at it. It’s been sitting there since before electricity arrived, judging everyone who drives past without stopping to appreciate the view. Stand on the spot and imagine the gossip it’s heard.

St. Augustines Holy WellHoly well · 1.3 mi

Explorer Tom St Augustine’s well is dried up, which is ironic for something dedicated to a saint known for miracles. It used to host a pattern day in August, so the parties are over now. Find a local and ask them the real story, then come back and tell me if you believed a word of it.

European Beech3.4 mi

Explorer Tom European Beech in County Galway is showing off its many names again. It’s like a diva refusing to pick a stage persona. Go on, take a photo and pretend you know which one is real.

European Yew3.7 miBattle of AughrimMajor battlefield · 4.1 miBattle of Aughrim Interpretative CentreMuseum · 4.3 miKillure Castle (in ruins)Castle, tower house · 5.8 mi

Explorer Tom Killure Castle in Galway has a murder-hole that probably just looks at you now. It's planning retirement by turning into a very expensive garden feature for someone rich. Hum something sad nearby, it adds atmosphere.

Kilconnell AbbeyVisitor attraction · 8.1 miClonbrock CastleCastle, tower house · 10 mi

Explorer Tom Clonbrock Castle is well-preserved, partially restored, and sits in flat woodland by the river. Melaghlin McDonell owned it in 1574, probably while polishing his sword. Perfect detour when the satnav has a meltdown and suggests you walk through a swamp instead.
