Bertie's Cottage

Detached four-bay single-storey vernacular house with attic storey, built c.1800. Pitched thatched roof having raised ridge, and painted rendered chimneystacks. Painted roughcast rendered walls. Square-headed window openings having painted stone sills with replacement uPVC windows to front elevation, fixed window to gable. Square-headed door opening having replacement half-glazed timber door. Wrought-iron pedestrian gate with rendered piers and rubble stone boundary walls to front garden.

The low elevation and chimneystack, thick walls and small openings are typical of the vernacular tradition in Ireland. Once common throughout the countryside and small villages, thatched buildings have become increasingly rare, and the survival of this example is notable. It retains its original form and structure. The garden wall is a typical feature and adds context to the site.
