Barrow

Located on the N-facing crest of the summit of a prominent hill known as Slieve Gullion. Two small barrows are visible on Google Earth from 2009 but are most clearly visible on the most recent (16/03/2021). This feature appears to be damaged by a relict WNW-ESE field drain running parallel with the current field bank c. 10m to the SW. It appears to be a small grass-covered platform (diam. c. 5m) defined by ditch or fosse and an outer bank (ext. diam. c. 15m WNW-ESE) whose features only survive WNW-N-ESE. The features are also visible on MapGenie imagery (2005-12; 2013-18), Digital Globe (2011-13) and Apple Maps, and were first reported by Jean Charles Caillére. A Neolithic ring-barrow; significant as part of a rare barrow group on the prominent Slieve Gullion hill, potentially linked to ceremonial or funerary landscapes of the later Neolithic period.
