What is recorded here

Barrow is a ditch barrow on the north crest of Slieve Gullion in County Meath. It appears as a grass-covered platform about five metres wide, surrounded by a shallow ditch reaching ten metres across. Two small barrows sit there still, visible in recent satellite images and first reported by Jean Charles Caillére. They are not grand, but they are complete enough to show that people shaped the hilltop long before maps existed.

Located on the N-facing crest of the summit of a prominent hill known as Slieve Gullion. Two small barrows are visible on Google Earth from 2009 but are most clearly visible on the most recent (16/03/2021). This feature appears to be complete as a grass-covered platform (diam. c. 5m) defined by ditch or fosse (ext. diam. c. 10m). The features are also visible on MapGenie imagery (2005-12; 2013-18), Digital Globe (2011-13) and Apple Maps, and were first reported by Jean Charles Caillére. Ditch barrow, likely dating to the Early Bronze Age. Its location on a prominent hill suggests it may have had ritual or ceremonial significance in the landscape.
