Ballyragget Bridge

Ten-arch rubble stone road bridge, built 1813, over River Nore, having five arches over river proper and further arches to each end. Now bypassed and in use as local access route. Partly ivy-clad random rubble stone walls with squat dressed limestone triangular cut-waters to piers with chamfered coping, and having squared rubble stone coping to parapets. Segmental arches with tooled limestone ashlar voussoirs, having rubble stone soffits with remains of render. Flat arch to west with rendered lintel. Grass banks to river.

Making a pleasing visual statement at a crossing over the River Nore to the west of Ballyragget, this attractive low-slung bridge represents an important element of the early transport heritage of County Kilkenny. Exhibiting a traditional construction in unrefined locally-sourced stone with tooled dressings displaying high-quality stone masonry, the bridge integrates well into an increasingly-overgrown setting.
