Castleview, Bridge Street

Attached four-bay two-storey over part-raised basement house, c.1825, possibly originally two separate two-bay two-storey houses with single-bay full-height return to north-east. Reroofed, c.1950. Now in use as guesthouse. Pitched roof (hipped to return) with replacement artificial slate, c.1950, clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks, and iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves having iron ties. Unpainted roughcast walls with rendered quoins to ends. Square-headed window openings (some in bipartite arrangement including to basement; round-headed window opening to return) with painted cut-limestone sills, six-over-six timber sash windows having six-over-four timber sash windows to left first floor, two-over-four timber sash windows to basement, and nine-over-six timber sash window to round-headed opening incorporating fanlight. Elliptical headed door opening approached by flight of five cut-limestone steps having iron railings, timber panelled door having sidelights, and fanlight. Interior with timber panelled shutters to window openings. Road fronted with sections of iron railings to front on cut-limestone plinth.

Possibly originally intended as two separate units an elegantly-composed middle-size house lends a formal quality to the street scene of Bridge Street on account of the presence of attributes including the balanced arrangement of Classically-proportioned openings, the enriched treatment of the door opening, and so on. Having been well maintained the house presents an early aspect with the essential composition qualities surviving in place together with most of the historic fabric both to the exterior and to the interior, thereby making a positive contribution to the character of the locality.
