What is recorded here
Ballyourane Castle is a ghost on a map. It is marked as a T-shaped structure but no wall, ditch or castle remains can be found, and the area holds no local memory that one ever stood there. The name may preserve a lost building, a changed boundary or a mapping mistake. What is certain is the absence: a place recorded as a castle yet refusing to give back even a stone.
Though marked clearly as T-shaped structure on OS 6-inch map there are no remains on ground of any fortification, nor is there any local tradition that one ever stood here (Healy 1988, 169).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
