Ballykenly Bridge

Five-arch, slightly hump-backed limestone road bridge, dated 1820, over River Funshion. Rubble masonry walls with dressed string courses. Render copings to parapet walls, with limestone date plaque and benchmark to west parapet. Cut limestone voussoirs to round arches, arches springing from ashlar limestone plinths with U-cutwaters to west elevation and V-cutwaters to east.

This hump-back bridge is notable for its ashlar limestone plinths from which the elegant arches spring. Textural interest is provided by the contrast between the dressed voussoirs, string courses and the rubble stone walls. The plaque provides historical context to the site. Built by the notable architect John Hargreaves, it forms a technically interesting structure over the River Funshion. This bridge is one of several structures funded by John Hyde, of Castle Hyde in the 1820s.
