What is recorded here
Detached single-storey rendered watch tower, built c. 1940. Square on plan, canted front to north, flat pre-cast concrete slab roof, squat concrete chimney to south. Unpainted smooth-rendered pre-cast (or insitu) single-skin concrete walls. Square-headed window openings, evidence survives of original painted one-over-one timber casement windows. Square-headed entrance door opening, door missing, rudimentary fireplace on south wall of interior. Located on Aughris Head overlooking Sligo Bay, approached from south across fields.
This little concrete watch-tower, while in an advanced stage of decay, must have once performed an important function. It is prominently located on an exposed headland.
This does not grant access. Most recorded buildings are privately owned; view them only from public ground unless the owner allows entry.
