Rubble stone weir, built c.1800, set diagonally across Woodford River. Battered to north side and having sluice gate to west end. Restored c.1980.
This weir is a notable landscape feature, both for its integral physical properties and for its role in creating Woodford Bay, the large dammed pond to the south-west of the town. The stacked rubble stone creates a pleasing textured effect, and contrasts pleasingly with the more recent rubble stone embankments. Formerly used to generate energy for a now defunct corn mill, and to provide street lighting for the town prior to the rural electrification scheme.

Explorer Tom The town of Woodford itself is basically the dog in charge of this whole operation. It’s got a vibe you can’t explain, only feel in your bones. Best visited with a curious kid who asks too many questions and no timetable to rush you through it.

Explorer Tom Burying Ground in Woodford was for strangers, which makes me feel a bit left out. Maybe they were just lost tourists who got tired of bad tea. Perfect detour when the satnav has a meltdown and you need to breathe.

Explorer Tom Coolfin Castle is missing most of its walls but acting like it’s still got the whole game. Ricor McRedmund owned it, but he probably couldn't pay the heating bill. Stop the car, it's worth the hazard lights, even if you just want to yell at a stump.
