RIC barracks

End of terrace five-bay three-storey former constabulary barracks, built c.1900, having integral carriage arch to north end. Formerly used as Garda barracks and now in use as house. Pitched slate roof with red brick chimneystacks and moulded red brick eaves course. Lined-and-ruled rendered walls with render plinth course. Square-headed window openings with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows having cut limestone sills, with wrought-iron sill guards to ground floor openings. Square-headed door opening with timber panelled door and plain overlight. Segmental-headed carriage arch with corrugated-iron double-leaf door.

This is a large and imposing building which dominates the view of Main Street from the bridge. Formerly a barracks, this function may provide an explanation for the unusually small windows to the ground floor. The prominent red brick chimneystacks add interest to the roofline of the street. Its broad frontage is enhanced by the retention of timber sliding sash windows.
