Turret

In level pasture. No visible surface trace of small rectangular structure (c. 10m E-W; c. 5m N-S) indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map and named 'Turret'. Structure not shown on 1905 OS 6-inch map. According to Jones (in Grove White 1905-25, vol. 1, 113), this turret, which was demolished in 1860, was 'traditionally supposed to be a belfry connected with a castle of the Roches'. Jones infers, 'from description that I got of it, it was more likely to be a Columbarium' (ibid.). Jones also says that 'foundations of the castle or church (CO025-113----) and a town were found in ploughing adjacent fields, also a furnace for burning the dead with remains of fires etc.'' (ibid.).
