Tower Bridge

Two-arch rubble limestone Classical-style road bridge over river, dated 1647. Widened, c.1825. Random squared rubble limestone walls with squared rubble limestone triangular cut-water to pier having rendered coping, cut-limestone stringcourse supporting balustraded parapet having cut-limestone date stone/plaque (dated 1647), and carved cut-limestone coping. Pair of segmental arches with squared rubble limestone voussoirs to original arch having rubble stone soffits, and cut-limestone voussoirs to additional arch having squared rubble limestone soffits. Sited spanning Dinin River with grass banks to river.

Representing an important element of the architectural heritage of the locality a gracefully-appointed middle-size bridge built by Patrick Dowlye (sic.) (n. d.) makes a positive visual statement in a rural setting: representing the product of two periods of construction the resulting overlapping of the arches produces a picturesque visual effect at a crossing over the Dinin River. An elaborate Classically-themed overhaul having been commissioned as part of an early nineteenth-century programme of development on the Jenkinstown House estate accounts for the robust detailing exhibiting high quality craftsmanship enhancing the design aesthetic of the composition: meanwhile, the title refers to a now long-lost turreted gate lodge once allowing access on to the Jenkinstown Castle estate.
