Perhaps a walker at Ballyrafton Wood in Ballyrafton found the iron gates shut and spotted the little stile in the wall beside them. The dog, unable to follow through the narrow opening, would sit by the gates with the injured air of someone left out deliberately.
Gateway, c.1850, comprising pair of cut-stone piers having stringcourses, cut-stone shallow conical capping, iron double gates, random rubble stone flanking boundary wall incorporating stile (with wedge-profiled aperture having cut-stone coping), and vertical coping. One of a pair. Road fronted at entrance to Ballyrafton Wood.
Originally forming one of a pair (second in pair remodelled, post-1946-7; not included in survey) flanking a minor rural road a simple gateway exhibiting good quality stone masonry while retaining attractive iron work makes a pleasing impression at the entrance to a wood probably originally having associations with the nearby Jenkinstown House estate (12401411/KK-14-11).
