Tobernaboghilla

Tobernaboghilla; a modernised shrine at the point where the Abbey and Erne rivers join. (Ó Muirgheasa No.2) Holy well recorded in 1936 as 'St. Patrick's Holy Well, at Abbey Bay, Assaroe, about a mile from Ballyshannon. Stations are still made there from 10th June to 20th September, but especially on the 15th August. People yet come twenty or thirty miles to do this station' (Ó Muirgheasa 1936, 144). Linked to St. Patrick, the well is traditionally associated with healing and pilgrimage, reflecting the widespread veneration of the saint at confluences and liminal sites in early Irish Christianity. The location at the meeting point of the Abbey and Erne rivers may also carry symbolic significance, reinforcing its spiritual importance in local tradition.
