Tobermochulla is a hidden holy well in County Clare, Ireland, where water rises through poorly drained soil rather than forming a visible basin. People continued performing stations at the site into the early twentieth century, trusting the invisible flow beneath the woodland edge. The well still belongs to memory and movement, even when the surface gives nothing back.

On a SE-facing slope, in an area of native woodland surrounded by pasture, except to NW where there are other small pockets of woodland. This monument is situated at the eastern edge of the woodland boundary. According to Westropp (1908-09, 391), ‘There is another holy well dedicated to St Mochuille in the townland of Fertanbeg, at which stations continue to be performed.’ Depicted on all OS historic mapping and named ‘Tobermochulla’. Not visible at ground level. A very poorly drained area where various springs rise and create various pools of water lodging and run-off downslope. Poached by livestock across surface of woodland due to poorly drained nature of ground. A children’s burial ground (CL035-031001-) is located c. 34m to SW. Tobermochulla is a holy well associated with Saint Mochulla, a 7th-century Irish monk and bishop known for his role in the spread of Christianity in Munster. The well is traditionally believed to have healing properties, particularly for eye ailments, and was historically visited as part of a pilgrimage or devotional practice involving the collection of water and the recitation of prayers.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
