The Black Stairs is a coastal rock feature in County Wicklow, composed of basalt formed during the Palaeogene period, around 60 to 35 million years ago, through volcanic activity associated with the opening of the North Atlantic. It is notable for its distinctive dark, step-like formations, which may reflect columnar jointing typical of rapidly cooled lava.
