What is recorded here

Under the peat in County Offaly, a single brushwood rod lies half-hidden in Sphagnum and Eriophorum, small enough to overlook yet distinct enough to measure. It may have been a lever, a marker or a forgotten tool, but the earth has taken its meaning back. What remains is shape without testimony, a wooden fragment waiting for a story that never came.

A single piece of brushwood (L 0.61m min.; diam. 0.046m) in moderately humified Sphagnum peat with Eriophorum. A further piece of brushwood is present in one drain face but its relationship is unclear. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 2001. The evidence is not sufficient to warrant its acceptance as the remains of an archaeological monument.
