Standing stone in Newstone

Marked only on the 1908 ed. of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in italic lettering as a Standing Stone. It is situated at the summit of the steep-sided Druminshin Hill. This is a narrow stone with a rectangular cross-section (dims at base 0.43m E-W; 0.23m N-S; H 1.8m). The top had broken off and it was repaired with pitch, while field stones have been gathered around its base. The stone is now leaning to the S and it could be a modern scratching-post. Likely dating to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, the stone may have had ceremonial or territorial significance. Its placement on a prominent hilltop suggests a possible role in prehistoric navigation, ritual activity, or as a boundary marker.
