Standing stone in Loggan Lower

A standing stone, identified as 'Leac Mhic Eochadha' and associated with the inauguration site of the Uí Cinsealaigh at Loggan, was located close to the motte and bailey (WX002-004001-) according to Orpen (1911, 210–11). This identification is not completely certain due to the Irish phraseology of the sources. However, the stone was still being used as an assembly point as late as 1592 when landholders from areas in the Kinsellaghs (just north of Gorey), Kilcheele (Mac Vadock’s Country) just west of Gorey in which Leac Mhic Eochaidh itself lay), and the Macamores (east and south of Gorey – modern-day Ballaghkeen North) met here with the Lord Deputy Henry Sidney to seek title deeds under English law (pers. com. Conchubhar Ó Crualaoich). Many of those involved had already done this at early dates. Cist burials (WX002-004002-) were discovered nearby. The location of the stone is not known exactly and it does not survive, but it appears to have been S of the bailey (Westropp 1904, 321). Dated to the early medieval period, the stone is likely associated with the ritual or political practices of the Uí Cinsealaigh dynasty. It may have been used for inauguration ceremonies, reflecting the symbolic importance of such stones in asserting authority and territorial claims.
