Standing stone in Barleyfield

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Standing stone in Barleyfield is a rectangular stone aligned north-south in a south-facing pasture slope in County Cork, Ireland. It stands one metre high and measures roughly twenty-five by eighteen centimetres at its base. A person may have set it there to mark a boundary, honour a loss or aid another person along a forgotten path. The stone still occupies that small part of the field, waiting to be remembered.
In pasture on S-facing slope. Rectangular stone aligned N-S (H 1m; 0.25m x 0.18m). (CMSS) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
