Shell Mound

On N side of Great Island, in estuary of Cork Harbour. Defined on 1933 OS 6-inch map by broken line to W of lodge and S of shore road. No visible surface trace. Schlichting (1973, 17) noted surface 'indications' measuring c. 160 feet E-W by c. 50 feet N-S. Two shell middens (CO076-032---; CO076-033---) further W along shore line. A radio-carbon determination of 730 +/- 60 bp (calibrated date range 1110 – 1340 AD) was recovered from oyster shell at the top (Laboratory: Beta 175809) (Milner & Woodman 2007, 103).
