Shay Elliott was Ireland's first major international cyclist, winning stages in every Grand Tour before dying young in 1971. He learned to ride at fourteen, joined local Dublin clubs, and became the first English speaker to wear the yellow jersey. A memorial in County Dublin keeps his name alive in the places where that unexpected rise began.
