Detached L-plan three-bay two-storey house, built c.1820, having full-height return to south end of rear (west) elevation with recent single-storey extension to re-entrant corner, and box-bay window to south gable with hipped slate roof. Pitched slate roofs with paired red brick chimneystacks, terracotta ridge tiles, timber bargeboards and cast-iron rainwater goods. Lined-and-ruled rendered walls with render quoins, and roughcast rendered to rear. Square-headed window openings having raised render reveals with moulded render surrounds, painted masonry sills and replacement one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Recent external timber shutters to windows to front and rear elevations. Square-headed door opening to front with moulded render surround and timber panelled door and over-light. Two ranges of single-storey outbuildings to rear of house, having pitched slate roofs with red brick eaves course and some cast-iron rainwater goods, rubble stone walls, square-headed window opening to west range with one-over-one pane timber sliding sash window, square-headed door openings with single and double-leaf timber battened doors, segmental-headed door opening, and elliptical carriage arch, with recent timber fittings. Decorative cast-iron pedestrian gate to narrow garden to front of house, with matching railings on render plinth. Matching double-leaf vehicular gate to north-west of house.
This well-composed house retains its original form, and is articulated by render detailing. The fenestration is enlivened by subtle moulded render surround, and the outbuildings and cast-iron railings to the front enhance the composition of the site.

Shantonagh Garda Síochána StationRic barracks · 138 yd

Explorer Tom Shantonagh Garda Station is pretending those seagulls aren't heckling its roof every single afternoon. They're just background noise for the real drama happening inside. Go at sunset and thank me later for this excellent local legend.

Ric barracks143 yd

Explorer Tom Ric barracks in Tullyrain is stuck because the map makers forgot to draw a door. It shares a wall with the Garda station, so you can hear their telly. Go in good boots and better luck next time.

Wedge tomb in LisnadarraghWedge tomb · 2.6 miLough Egish IslandIslet · 2.8 miCarrickcreenyMountain / peak · 3.2 mi

Explorer Tom Carrickcreeny in County Cavan inspired a poet to write such bad verses that the birds actually flew away in shame. The mountain just shrugs, unbothered by the literary disaster that happened on its slopes centuries ago. Stand on the spot and imagine the gossip it's heard.

Senator Billy Fox 1939 - 1974Memorial · 3.5 miBush IslandIslet · 3.6 mi

Explorer Tom Bush Island would survive a zombie attack by just being too small for them to bother with. It’s basically an impenetrable fortress of pure indifference and moss. Pop by and tell it it's looking well.

Portal tomb in LennanPortal tomb · 7.4 mi

Explorer Tom Portal tomb in Lennan is perched on a drumlin ridge, looking slightly tipsy from the wind. If it could order at a chipper, it’d just want a stone and some silence. Stand on the spot and imagine the gossip it's heard.

Dartrey ForestForest · 8.7 mi

Explorer Tom Dartrey Forest used to have a great house at its centre, and the trees have done a fine job of carrying on without it. The Dawson family's Dartrey House was demolished in 1946. Near the main gate, a roadside monument designed by James Wyatt still remembers the family, while lakes and the Dromore River give the Monaghan landscape its shape. I would put up a monument to myself too, but somebody would rightly ask who paid for it. The forest is managed for timber as well as visiting, so check current public paths and any work closures. Keep to permitted routes and leave the old wall and monuments alone. Look across the linked water from a safe trail. The missing house is one story; the living woods have plenty of their own.

Flagpole HillMountain / peak · 9.1 miFair of MuffVisitor information · 9.5 mi

Explorer Tom Fair of Muff in County Cavan would order a mountain of chips and a pint if it could walk into a chippy. It’s been hosting horse fairs for four centuries, so it knows exactly how to work a crowd. Perfect place to be dramatically windswept while pretending you planned the hairdo.

LoughanleaghForest · 9.5 mi

Explorer Tom Loughanleagh in County Cavan is a forest that got left behind at a party and never quite figured out what it was supposed to be doing there. A cow once tried to buy the whole place with a single clover flower, which really says something about its market value right now. Bring wellies and low expectations, leave delighted.
