Shantonagh Garda Síochána Station

Semi-detached three-bay two-storey constabulary barracks, built c.1880, having lean-to single-storey addition to rear (south) elevation. Now in use as Garda station. Pitched slate roof with yellow brick chimneystacks, terracotta ridge cresting, cast-iron rainwater goods, timber bargeboards and exposed rafter ends. Lined-and-ruled rendered walling to front elevation with render quoins, and roughcast rendered walls elsewhere. Cast-iron Garda Síochána crest on timber plaque over door to front. Square-headed window openings, with render reveals and painted masonry sills and replacement uPVC windows and door. Garden to front bounded by rendered wall with square-plan rendered piers to wrought-iron pedestrian gate.

Now in use as a Garda station, this former RIC barracks has the plain but well ordered facade typical of the type. The render quoins serve to enhance and emphasise the structural properties of the building. It retains much of its original form and character. The adjoining house was built as a sergeant's residence, adding contextual interest to the site, and retaining its timber sliding sash windows and doors. Prominently sited at a main junction, this building makes a positive contribution to the streetscape.
