Trein Mors Grave

Situated on a broad, low hill. It Is depicted faintly as an oval feature (max. dims c. 15m E-W; c. 8m N-S) described in gothic lettering as ‘Trein Mor’s Grave’ on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map. Trein Mór (the great strong one) was the grandfather of Fionn Mac Cumhaill, mythical leader of the Fianna, as recorded in the local folk lore (IFC Schools Ms, 939, 267; 940, 42: https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes). The present landowner recalls that there was a grave here, 8ft by 5 ft (c. 2.4m x c. 1.5m), formed of stones set on edge. There is a scrub-covered area obscured by field stones against the field bank to the W.
