Shanballyduff Castle is a four-storey limestone tower house on a Tipperary hilltop, still standing with its base-batter intact and bawn walls largely preserved. In 1640 it belonged to Pierce Butler, and the Civil Survey of 1654-6 described it as a good castle with a slate house, bawn and orchard. Its double lobby, murder-hole, guardroom, spiral staircase and layered windows show how domestic life and defence were woven together. Ivy, scrub, a pond and seven later steps complete a place where medieval urgency has softened into quiet endurance.
