Dangandargan Church (in ruins)

In pasture, on gentle E-facing slope in rolling pasture. Poorly preserved church (dims. c. 6.3m N-S; c. 17.8m E-W) composed of limestone rubble, roughly coursed. The inner face of the SW angle of church is best preserved, with only a short length of the S end of the W gable and the W end of the S wall (L 3.9m) surviving. The remainder of the W gable (Wth c. 6.3m) and S wall (total visible L 5.7m) are now mounds of rubble, as is the W end of the N wall. The remainder of the church is defined by a low platform, defined by scarp (H 0.63m above ext.). According to the OS letters (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 2, 169) 'the church was built of limestone and lime and sand mortar. The original length is not ascertainable; the breadth was eighteen feet ten inches [5.7m]. Only six feet seven inches [2m] in height of the west gable remain, and attached to it eleven feet [3.3m] in length at ground of south sidewall remain, being the same height, namely six feet seven inches. The thickness is three feet four inches [1m]. The length at top is not the same as at the ground, the east part being destroyed more towards the top. The end of the west gable at north side is injured, as is also the centre as far as middle of the thickness on the interior'. The church is enclosed by an earthen bank (TS068-026001-) and a graveyard (TS068-026003-). Amongst the rubble of the church is a fragment from a side panel of a chest tomb (TS083-019080-), which originally came from a chest tomb (TS061-025146-) in the cathedral (TS061-025003-) on St. Patricksrock.
