Rathcoun castle reduced to a mossy rectangular scar beside its enclosure, its walls cut into the upslope and a fallen block jammed across the corner. The interior was levelled by digging into the hill, creating a small room where people may have stood, watched, or kept what mattered. Much has collapsed or been forgotten, but the shape remains clear enough to imagine the hand that built it and the life that moved through it.

Adjoining ESE-side of enclosure (TS060-107005-). Poorly preserved remains of rectangular area (dims. 9.2m NNW-SSE; 6m WNW-ESE) defined by collapsed remains of wall (T at top 1.35m; total T 4.15m; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 0.1m) at WSW and poorly defined wall (T at top 2m; total T 4m; int. H 0.35m) at NNW which are both cut into an upslope on these sides. Stones of wall at top and inner face are moss covered. Wall is poorly preserved to ENE and consists of an intermittent, low collapsed wall of earth and moss-covered stones. Sod covered mound forms SE-corner. Only short return of SSE wall survives at WSW-corner. Large block of masonry (T 1.15m; H 1.8m; L 2.5m) which appears to have fallen from the SW-corner rests partially on WSW-wall and encroaches into SW-corner of interior. A level interior has been created by cutting into the upslope to WSW and NNW. Scatter of loose stone within. According to OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 119 (314)) this monument consists of a 'fragment of a wall said to be part of a castle.' Cahill (1982) states that these masonry remains are presumed to be that of the castle and are located to the E-side of enclosure (TS060-107005-).
