Seaview House

Detached three-bay two-storey over basement house, built c. 1840. T-plan, flat-roofed extension to north-east, lean-to to east. Hipped and pitched slate roofs, clay ridge and hip tiles, red brick flat-capped chimneystacks, cast-iron gutters on painted timber projecting eaves on paired modillions, painted timber decorative bargeboards. Unpainted roughcast rendered walling, unpainted smooth rendered channelled quoins, unpainted smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walling to basement. Square-headed window openings, painted smooth rendered slightly-projecting reveals and soffits, tooled stone sills, painted timber two-over-two sliding sash windows, three-over-six to basement, some replacement uPVC casement windows. Elliptical-headed door opening, painted smooth rendered slightly-projecting reveals, engaged painted tooled stone Doric columns, hardwood panelled and glazed door, painted moulded stone transom, plain-glazed fanlight, tooled limestone threshold, approached by eight tooled limestone steps flanked by wrought-iron railings with cast-iron embellishments. Entrance gates to west with roughcast piers and wrought-iron gates; ranges of single- and two-storey outbuildings to south-west, pitched slate roofs, rubble stone walling, red brick dressings, square-headed openings, timber sliding sash windows.

This attractive, symmetrical and well-maintained example of a nineteenth century country house achieves additional dignity by being raised over a basement. It displays interesting textural variation and retains much original fenestration. The finely-tooled door surround and skillfully executed railings and approach steps are the highlight of the façade confirming the high quality craftsmanship available at the time of its construction.
