What is recorded here

Detached three-bay two-storey former teacher's house, built c.1895, having gablet to entrance bay containing paired half-dormer windows, and with two-bay single-storey return to rear elevation. Now in use as private house. Pitched slate roof, with red brick gable end chimneystacks, and having monopitch slate roof to return. Roughcast rendered walls with painted quoins. Square-headed window openings, with replacement uPVC windows to ground floor front and to west gable, and four-over-four pane timber sliding sash windows to dormer floor at front and to east gable. Square-headed door opening with recent timber battened door and lean-to slate canopy on angled timber brackets. Set back from road, with rendered boundary walls and rendered piers. Inscribed date and name stone reading 'Anney National School 1896' set into boundary wall to west.
The teacher's house for nearby Anny National School, the form of this house is identical to that at Drumgoosat, with the paired windows in the gable to the front elevation making them a distinctive type. The roughcast render and the painted quoins combine to create a pleasing textural contrast, and enhance the well ordered symmetrical facade. Like school buildings, the Board of Works prepared standard designs for teacher's houses, and provided loans at attractive rates for their construction following the National School Teachers' Residences (Ireland) Act of 1875. The simple form and small scale is similar to that of the school, and they enhance and contextualise each other.
