What is recorded here

Cloch Liath stands one point seven metres tall in a level Whiterath field, its local slate tapering like a forgotten finger pointing at nothing. People have looked up at that smooth grey shape since before written records, perhaps marking a boundary, a burial or a promise made to the land. It still occupies the field without apology, waiting for someone reckless enough to ask what it remembers.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Situated in level field, in gently undulating countryside. Standing stone (max. dims. H 1.7m, 1.7m by 0.9m in section) of local slate, tapering from base to top. Locally known as 'Cloch Liath' (CLAJ 1925, 47)
