What is recorded here

Taylor and Skinner's 1777 map placed a castle in Newrath, yet the 1778 edition erased it without warning. That sudden disappearance suggests the structure fell, was demolished or was never more than a drawing mistake. The land keeps the secret because no wall, ditch or stone has answered the question since.

A castle is shown on Taylor and Skinner's map of 1777 (Stubbs 1911, 350), but not on the 1778 edition. The precise location is not known. The above description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991).
