Standing stone in Gneeves (duhallow By., Castlemagner Par.)

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Remove it from its birthplace and it becomes a fence post, not a monument. The stone in Gneeves still stands four feet eight inches tall beside the boundary, but the hand that first lifted it forgot the hole where it belonged. Size is easy to measure. Memory is the part the men took with them.
Bowman (1934, 63) recorded standing stone 'in D. McCarthy's; this was removed from its original site, and is now standing by the fence 4ft 8in by 2ft 1in by 1ft 7in'. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
