Derrycammagh Fort

Derrycammagh Fort rises six to nine metres above the River Glyde, a Norman military mound built with a sharp northern ditch and a long eastern bailey that later lost much of its shape. The numbers remain clear even when the boundary fades: twenty-nine metres across at the base, ten by twelve at the top, and a southwestern rampart added later against the mound itself. What is missing is easier to imagine than the stones, because a fort such as this would have smelled of wet grass, horse sweat and wood smoke, with people moving between the courtyard and the summit when the river light changed.
