What is recorded here

Indicated is a levelled fairy fort in County Cork, Ireland, where a circular scarp and saucer-shaped interior still mark the site of Liscrally. Lewis described subterraneous passages winding around the mound in 1837, but ploughs and people have since smoothed much of its edge. The western slope remains the steepest, while the southeast opening faces the living land. It is the kind of place that remembers being hidden even when it can no longer be seen.

In tillage, above stream. Shown on 1842 and 1902 OS 6-inch map as dotted circular enclosure (diam. c. 60m), named 'fort, site of'. Levelled; circular raised area defined by scarp, steepest to W, crowned by low rise. Entrance to SE. Interior saucer-shaped. This may be fort of 'Liscrally' where, according to Lewis (1837 vol 1, 377), 'are the remains of an old circular fort defended by a rampart and fosse...it contains subterraneous passages (CO112-006001-), which extend all around the mound'.
