Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Knocknamona

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Knocknamona held a thirty-metre earthen ringfort that vanished before modern cameras arrived. The 1842 survey captured its circular shape in rolling pasture, but human hands or patience smoothed the ridge into ordinary grass. The fort may have guarded a farm, a family or a fleeting border, yet it surrendered its identity to the soil. What remains is a ghost measured in metres, visible only through the confidence of a drawing made before the land forgot it.
In gently rolling pasture. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
