Font (present location) in Kilsaran — Report the wrong picture

One octagonal greenstone font from a lost thatched chapel at Greenmount still stands in the Kilsaran graveyard, carrying water for baptism long after its building disappeared. The other font is missing, perhaps broken, buried or taken, leaving a gap in the story that no amount of measurement can fill. Together they suggest a small worship place where people gathered to name children and mark beginnings before the stone was moved into a newer churchyard.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Two fonts of greenstone, said to be from a thatched chapel that formerly stood at Greenmount, were removed to the graveyard at St Mary's R.C.church, Kilsaran. One is a small octagonal vessel with a circular flat bottomed basin (H 0.23m, diam. of base 0.33m, T of rim 0.05m, D 0.15m). (For other see LH015-011005-).
