Castlebellingham is the hidden heart of a lost castle, buried beneath the mansion grounds where faint foundations still mark the shape of forgotten walls. The site appears on old maps but resists the eye, suggesting a place that withdrew rather than fell. It may have been a warning, a boundary, or a house for someone who stopped being remembered. What is missing is not absence; it is a room waiting to be entered.

There is the site of an earlier castle within the grounds of Castle Bellingham mansion and some foundations survived according to Tempest (1952b, vol. 3, 131-2). The site is marked on the 1907 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. (Anon. 1908, 307), but there are no visible remains of a structure. The site of Castle Bellingham was likely held by the Bellingham family, who were prominent in the area during the medieval period. The castle is remembered for its historical association with local power and landownership in Ulster.
