Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Killytogher

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Killytogher holds a thirty-four-metre circular platform wrapped in two heavy earthen banks and outer ditches. The true entrance has vanished beneath soil and time, forcing every visitor to circle the ridge before finding a way in. The fort refuses easy reading, preserving a closed shape where human entry and exit have been erased.
Raised circular area (int. diam. 34m) enclosed by two substantial earthen banks with external fosses. An earlier report (OPW 1974) recorded a short segment of low earthen bank at the outer lip of the outer fosse at S. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
