What is recorded here
In Moyle Big, County Carlow, a seven-metre circular trench marked a late Neolithic or early Bronze Age house, now buried beneath the N9/N10 Kilcullen-Waterford Road. Fifteen stone tools, including a polished axe and barbed arrowhead, scattered nearby suggest people lived, hunted and made decisions there before medieval ditches cut through the older ground. The road builders exposed the trench, but the house itself vanished again, leaving only a thin circle of soil memory and the chance that someone once stood inside it.
Excavated in advance of construction of the N9/N10 Kilcullen-Waterford Road (Excavation Licence number E2595), a circular slot trench (diam 7m; Wth of trench 0.55m) was uncovered. No finds were recovered from the trench but 15 stone artefacts including a barbed and tanged arrowhead and a polished stone axe were recovered in the immediate area. A late Neolithic to early/middle Bronze age date has been suggested for the structure. It was heavily disturbed by ditches dating to the medieval period (CW007-140----).
