The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Shown on 1839 'OS 6-inch' map as rectangular structure. No visible trace. Probably a tower house. See also castle (CW007-030----).

Graigue Castle in ruins, Bennekerry was built by the Butler family in the 15th century and later held by the Fitzgeralds. It is remembered as a significant medieval stronghold in the region, reflecting the power struggles between rival Irish and Anglo-Norman families.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
