Gurteenkreen Castle vanished completely from flat Cork pasture, erasing even the ivy-covered ruin visible in 1907. In 1838 a dwelling still leaned against its gable end, suggesting humans adapted the castle rather than abandoning it immediately. The building may have retreated into ordinary life before disappearing entirely, turning a fortified house into a forgotten field.

In flat pasture. No visible surface trace of castle. Photograph taken in 1907 (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 3, opp. 164) shows view from NW of ivy-covered ruin: N wall has base batter and stands one storey high; W wall stands two storeys high. Described in 1838 as 'an old castle (in ruins), with a dwelling house built against the gable end of it' (ibid., 164). No castle shown in townland on Down Survey (1655-6) barony map.
