Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rosscolgan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts in Cavan are not mysterious at all. They are ordinary ringforts, built by people, lived in by people, and forgotten only because memory is short. Rosscolgan is one of them: a circular earthwork with a bank and trench, nothing more. The fairy name comes later, when people stopped knowing the truth and invented a story to fill the gap.
Raised circular area (int. dims. 43m NW-SE; 41.5m NE-SW) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank which has been incorporated into the field boundary from WNW-N. A deep external trench surrounding the bank may have been dug on the site of a fosse. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
