Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Monatooreen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Six earthen rings, one huge and five smaller, stood in Monatooreen until destruction erased them. Power wrote about them in 1923, but he gave no coordinates, only a count and a warning that they were gone. The land kept their shape long enough for people to walk past and forget what they covered.
According to Power (1923, 179), 'there were no fewer than six lioses, one of them of unusually large size, but they have all been destroyed'. Exact location of these sites unknown. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
