Austin and I stood inside the broken ring at Aughnalyra, looking for the shape of life that made the fort. Clara appeared beside us, not as a victim but as the resident child of the place. She touched the stone edge and showed us a small kitchen, a warning light and a door that opened only when someone stopped fearing the dark. The fort was not a tomb. It was a teacher, waiting for people strong enough to learn its lesson.

In pasture on break in steep SW-facing slope. Roughly circular area (23.2m N-S; 22m E-W) enclosed by overgrown bank (H 0.2m), mainly of large stones with earth. Gaps in bank to ESE, W and NW. Interior slopes to SW; used as dump for field stones. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
