Curraghbower Mill (Corn)

On W bank of Duvglasha River, c. 1.7 km S of Lombardstown. Roofless 3-storey, gable-ended mill (c. 12m NW-SE; c. 7m NE-SW), 3 bays wide, built of random-rubble sandstone; built against NE-facing slope. Windows have wooden lintels; some frames survive in poor condition. No internal floors survive; corrugated iron lean-to covers interior. Wheel-pit (Wth 1.45m) alongside SE gable, contains suspension overshot waterwheel (Wth 1.16m, diam. c. 7m): cast-iron axle; eight wooden arms; secondary thin iron tie arms; larch wood buckets and shroud plate with iron rim (wood painted with pitch). To rear of mill are two stone piers which carried launder, and part of sluice gate which controlled flow between millrace and launder. Built against SW face is 4-storey gable-ended extension, with attic; brick-arched window opes; wooden floors in poor condition. Attached to W corner of extension is 2-storey, 5-bay, gable-ended building; converted to residence in early 20th century. Two millraces: one taken from Glengarriff Stream c. 1.5km to W; second taken from Duvglasha River at Lackavihoonig Bridge c. 550m to S. Mill built by George Bolster in 1848, and ceased to function in early 1930s (Kavanagh 1996, 122). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
