Cooragannive Burial Ground

Burial ground

What is recorded here

No one knows who sleeps beneath the rocky scrub on the south side of the Ilen river, but the land has kept that secret since before maps existed. The absence of visible trace does not diminish the place; it suggests the dead asked only for forgetfulness. What is forgotten is not lost, because memory lives in the body of the land rather than in the minds of the living.
In rocky scrub land on S side of Ilen river. No visible surface trace. Location moved on OS 6-inch map (1902) c. 150m to W (CO132-048---). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
