Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Cargan Castle stood with three small dwellings in Kernanstown when the Down Survey mapped the area in 1655-6. It has no classification despite the castle name. A stray date stone may still lie hidden nearby, waiting for someone to notice the numbers cut into its surface.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Marked 'Cargan Castle' and shown with three small dwellings in this part of Kernanstown on the Down Survey (1655-6) map. Not precisely located. Date stone (CW007-005----) possibly from this site.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
