Battlefield in Carrickaneena

Battlefield

What is recorded here

Carrickaneena in County Louth carries the name of a battlefield, though the exact date and warring parties have slipped from local memory. The land may still hold the shape of that violence, buried beneath grass and forgotten by the people who walk it now. Names like this appear suddenly in ordinary townlands, reminding us that peace is often only the last chapter of a brutal story.
The Archaeological Survey of Ireland (ASI) is in the process of providing information on all monuments on The Historic Environment Viewer (HEV).
